The Taliban group released an internet statement claiming responsibility for Sunday's attack on an official celebration attended by President Karzai at the National Stadium in Kabul. The statement, which was signed by the group's spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid, explained that the attack was carried out by six Taliban fighters. "They fired their RPGs and machine guns on members of the traitor administration inside the stadium, thus killing several high-ranking officials, parliamentarians, as well as a large number of troops," the statement claimed. "Three of the commandoes returned safely to base, and three were martyred on site," it added.
The statement also claimed that this is not the first time that the Taliban carried out such an attack, and reminded of the attack on the well-guarded Serena Hotel in Kabul last January.
