NEW YORK (CBS) A more subdued Dina Lohan appeared Monday on the "Today Show" with Matt Lauer, praising Lindsay's strength as she battles drug addiction and saying that California's Betty Ford Rehab facility is the best thing for her troubled daughter.

Lindsay is trying to make amends by emailing her friends from inside rehab to apologize for her past behavior.

While Dina says her daughter is "happy and relaxed" during her treatment, she explained  why she seemed to be in denial about Lindsay's being an addict during an interview with Lauer a few months ago.

"As a mother it wasn't for me to come and tell the world about her problem ... I wasn't in denial. It was for her to come to her evolution," she said. "As a mother we protect. ..Now I'm happy and relieved myself." (Lindsay on Sept. 18 tweeted that she had an addiction problem, after failing a court-ordered drug test.)

Is there any truth to the rumors that Lindsay and her estranged father, Michael Lohan have reconciled?

Dina dodged the question, saying she doesn't read the tabloids and that "It's all about Lindsay and her healing." She did say however that she would welcome a reconciliation if it was to happen.

Lindsay has been able to take breaks from rehab to go shopping and reportedly purchased pajama pants and socks for $200 - a small price compared to her previous shopping sprees.

So will Lindsay be released early from rehab again - a move that apparently wasn't in her best interest to begin with?

According to Dina, no. She has another eight weeks to go and will be released on Jan. 3.

"Lindsay wants to stay," she is learning the trigger points and why she turns to drugs and addiction. It's a lifelong journey."
