CBS News -- With reports of an American woman killed in Syria, all eyes are looking more closely at the situation unfolding there. Even before that development late Thursday, embattled President Bashar al Assad said this week in a TV interview that the Russians were going to deliver anti-aircraft missiles to Syria. The Russians have been coy about what that means and where those missiles are. What does the U.S. know? Is this a game-changer that will force President Barack Obama's hand? We'll talk to Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., about the situation. He's just returned from the country and meetings with rebel fighters, and he's been an advocate for nearly two years for increased American engagement in the country. What does he think the U.S. needs to do?
Senate Armed Services Committee member Jack Reed, D-R.I., will also share his insight into the situation in Syria. The Committee held a closed hearing on Syria earlier this month when there were reports chemical weapons had been used in the struggle. What other information does he need to know?
We'll also talk to them both about sexual assault in the military. Sen. Reed is the only West Point graduate currently serving in the Senate. Does he have special insight into the culture at military academies? Sen. McCain, also a veteran, is taking a lead on this issue. He's said that the Armed Services Committee is going to gather proposals and bills addressing sexual assault in the armed services together and see if it can reach a consensus because "action has to be taken."
To talk about all of this as well as a number of apparent scandals the White House finds itself in: the probe into the Associated Press's phone records, its handling of the consulate attack in Benghazi, and the IRS's targeting of conservative groups we'll turn to the Executive Editor of The New York Times Jill Abramson, The Washington Post's Bob Woodward and David Ignatius, The Daily Beast's Dan Klaidman and CBS News' Political Director John Dickerson.
