(CBS) Authorities in Mexico are reportedly investigating the shooting death of a man who was recently praised as a hero for defending his home against three armed men in a home invasion last month.
Alonzo Sandoval and his wife were shot and killed at their auto parts shop on Tuesday outside Ciudad Juarez in Puerto Palomas de Villa, a spokesman with the Chihuahua state prosecutors' office told CNN.
"Police agents were assigned to monitor his business for protection, but he refused because he said the agents would scare away customers," the spokesman told the network.
CNN reports that police are still investigating whether the attempted home invasion, which took place on Jan. 29, had anything to do with his murder.
"He lawfully defended his property and his family and now he is dead. We cannot concretely say one event had to do with the other, but it is part of our investigation," the spokesman said.
