Gelman was arraigned Sunday in Brooklyn Criminal Court on charges that he hacked three people to death Friday, then stalked the city for more than a day, attacking innocent strangers, hijacking vehicles and killing a pedestrian with a car.

The bloody spree came to a halt when Gelman was arrested on a subway train beneath Times Square Saturday morning.

According to the New York Post, authorities found spray-painted red hearts with 20-year-old victim Yelena Bulchenko's first name on the outside wall of a squalid cinder-block shack in Brooklyn. Beer cans and hypodermic needles littered the floor inside Gelman's reputed shrine where he was once caught spray-painting graffiti, reports the paper.

Bulchenko, who was initially identified as Gelman's ex-girlfriend, was chased out of her Brooklyn home Friday morning before Gelman fatally stabbed her 11 times, according to authorities. The nature of Bulchenko and Gelman's relationship was later noted as unclear. Some friends said that if the two ever dated, they were unaware of it.

"He was obsessed with her but she wanted nothing to do with him," Bulchenko's friend, Aleksandra Ilyayeva, told CBS station WCBS.

Police said Gelman snapped shortly after 5:00 a.m. Friday during an argument over the use of his mother's Lexus sedan. His stepfather, Aleksandr Kuznetsov, intervened and was stabbed to death at their apartment in Brooklyn, according to authorities. Gelman's mother was uninjured.

After Gelman allegedly murdered his stepfather he turned up at the home of Yelena Bulchenko's mother, 56-year-old Anna Bulchenko, and stabbed her to death before he reportedly killed the woman's daughter.

Gelman then allegedly sped away in his mother's car to another part of Brooklyn where he rear-ended a Pontiac, then stabbed the driver three times before stealing the vehicle. Police said the driver was at a hospital in stable condition. In the second car, Gelman allegedly ran down a pedestrian, who died later at a hospital.

Gelman is charged with four counts of murder, one count of attempted murder, one count of assault, two counts of robbery and two counts of criminal possession of a weapon, according to WCBS.

As he was being escorted out of court Sunday, Gelman claimed he was being "setup." He is currently being held without bail and is scheduled to appear in court again Monday for another procedural hearing.
