The feeding of Halloween pumpkins to elephants is also an annual tradition at the North Carolina Zoo in Asheboro.
At the National Zoo, one African and three Asian elephants shared a feast of 8,000 pounds of pumpkins. Operators of area farms donated some of their surplus for the sixth straight year.
Elephants like to eat gourds and other garden vegetables. The sight of the pumpkins piled at the zoo had them charging outside to chow down as delighted zoo-goers watched.
